A Sermon on Trinity Sunday

Hosea 11:1-4 Psalm 130:5-8; 131:1-3 2 Peter 1:16-18 Matthew 28:16-20

First Reading: Hosea 11:1-4

 1When Israel was a child, I loved them,

 and out of Egypt I called my child.

 2They, the Baals, called to them,

 they went out to the Baals;

 they sacrificed and to idols,

 they offered incense.

 3Yet it was I who walked toddling Ephraim,

 taking them by their arms;

 yet they did not know that I healed them.

 4I led them with human ties,

 with bonds of love.

 I was to them like those

 who lift babies to their cheeks.

 I bent down to them and fed them.

Psalm: Psalm 130:5-8; 131:1-3

 5I wait for the Womb of Creation, my soul waits,

 and in her word I hope.

 6My soul keeps watch for the Creator,

 more than those who watch for the morning,

 more than those who watch for the morning.

 7Israel, hope in the Mother of Creation!

 For with the Creator of All there is faithful love,

 and with her is abundant redemption.

 8It is she who will redeem Israel

 from all their iniquities.

 131:1Womb of Life, my heart is not lifted up,

 nor my eyes exalted;

 I do not keep company with things

 great and too wondrous for me.

 2Rather, I have soothed and quieted my soul,

 like a weaned child with her mother;

 my soul is like a weaned child within me.

 3Israel, hope in the Wellspring of Life

 from now until forever.

Second Reading: 2 Peter 1:16-18

16For we did not follow sophisticated mythologies when we made known to you all the power and coming of our Redeemer Jesus Christ, rather we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For Christ from God the Sovereign received honor and glory, a voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18And we ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.

Gospel: Matthew 28:16-20

16Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus sent them. 17And when they saw him, they bowed down worshipping him; but some doubted. 18Then Jesus came and said to them saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. Now look, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
